Overview of the GRE

GRE or the Graduate Record Examination is an entry level standardised test that is undertaken by candidates who want to study Masters abroad. The GRE is a mandatory admission criteria in almost all the overseas universities.

Conducted by the ETS or Educational Testing Services , GRE is the most important student assessment programs for graduate admissions. What is the GRE general test ?

The GRE General Test is designed to check if a candidate’s verbal reasoning, analyzing skills, critical thinking and quantitative reasoning skills are strong enough. Test takers judge a candidate on how well they are equipped with problem solving skills. The best thing about the GRE exam is that in a computer-based general test, the performance of a candidate on earlier sections determines the difficulty level of subsequent sections

GRE Computer-Based Test–

Students signing up for the computer based GRE take the GRE general test on a computer. However, the tests are only conducted at authorized test centers with good connectivity to the internet and computer. If you have a good typing speed then you can opt for this particular format of GRE.

GRE Paper-Based Test–

The GRE paper-based test can be taken on pen and paper at the designated test centers. However, this model of the test is currently unavailable in India.

GRE at Home Test–

The GRE at Home test was launched during the covid pandemic. This mode of GRE launched by ETS helped GRE aspirants successfully ace the test.

However, there are certain protocols set by the ETS for the examinees. If the examinees meet the requirements set by the test takers are only acceptable for this mode of the test.

GRE Subject Test

The GRE Subject Test was created to check a candidate’s knowledge and learning on a particular subject. If you want to get enrolled in technical programs or specialized subjects you can take the GRE subject test.

The subjects for the general test include Mathematics, Physics, Chemistry, and Psychology. The exam duration is 170 minutes.

1.GRE Computer-Based Test

The GRE computer-based test or CBT is taken on a computer at designated test centers.

2.GRE Paper-Based Test

The GRE paper-based test or PBT is offered in paper and pen mode with a duration of 3 hours and 30 minutes

1.GRE Analytical Writing Syllabus

The GRE Analytical Writing section tests your critical thinking skills. This section demands logical reasoning with examples. The primary aim of the GRE Analytical section is to articulate your thoughts and ideas using rational and argumentative discussions. Make sure you use proper grammar and vocabulary while solving this section.

This section demands answering two task questions on

  • Issue Task: you have to write an essay on a specific topic in 30 minutes.
  • Argument Task: critically analyze a given argument within 30 minutes. Arguments should be through an essay.

2.GRE Verbal Reasoning Syllabus

The Verbal Reasoning section is designed to judge an examinees ability to interpret written materials. A relevance has to be formed amongst words and concepts. This section assesses the candidate’s knowledge and identification of the author’s perception, relevant points, word meanings, etc.

GRE Subject Test Syllabus

GRE Math

candidates have to attend and solve 66 multiple choice questions from algebra, calculus, and other related topics

GRE Physics

solve 100 five-choice questions based on graphs, diagrams, atomic physics, electromagnetism, mechanics, quantum mechanics, laboratory methods and specialized topics

GRE Chemistry

includes 130 multiple choice questions based on analytical, organic, inorganic, and physical chemistry.

GRE Psychology

consists of 205 multiple-choice questions based on biological, developmental, cognitive, social, and clinical studies.

GRE Registration

There are 3 ways to register for the GRE

  • Online Registration – visit ETS website and follow the registration and slot booking instructions.
  • Offline Registration – call the Regional Registration Center number (91-124-4147700)
  • Mail Registration- you will need a GRE General test authorization voucher mail.
