Courses and duration

Undergraduate level

Students can enrol in an undergraduate programme immediately after graduating from high school. Students can opt to enrol in either a two-year associate’s degree or a four-year bachelor’s degree. In both study programmes, students have to choose a ‘major’ , a core subject in their field of study. Apart from the major, students are also required to take general education classes to improve their critical thinking and communication skills.

Some of the top bachelor’s degree programs are ;

  • Bachelor of Arts (B.A)
  • Bachelor of Science( B.S)
  • Bachelor of Engineering(B.Eng)

Postgraduate level

In the US, postgraduate-level studies include master’s and doctoral programmes, and students who have only completed a bachelor’s degree are eligible to enrol in a postgraduate programme. Masters programmes are based on two types, course based and thesis based. Course-based masters programmes typically involve a structured curriculum where students take a set number of courses and complete assignments or exams. These programmes are designed to provide a broad and comprehensive understanding of the subject matter. On the other hand, thesis-based masters programmes require students to conduct independent research under the guidance of a faculty advisor. This type of programme is more focused on original research and culminates in the completion of a thesis or dissertation.

Master’s degrees in the US can be of one to two years duration, depending on the degree and field of study. Students must complete a thesis or dissertation before receiving the master’s degree.

The length of doctorate programmes will depend on whether the student has to first complete a master’s programme in a related discipline and the time taken to complete a dissertation. If the students have already finished their master’s degree before enrolling in a doctoral programme, then the course work will generally take two to three years. Once the students have completed the doctoral classes, they will start working on the dissertation or research project under the supervision of an advisor or guide from the field of study.

Some of the top master’s programme in USA;

  • Master of Arts (MA)
  • Master of Fine Arts (MFA)

Deadlines and Intakes :

Student Intakes in the USA

Intakes Starts From Duration Programs Offered Scholarship Availability
Fall Septembe September- December Wide range of full time, part time and online courses Higher scholarship availability as compared to other intakes
Spring January January- May Lesser courses offered Fewer scholarship options
Summer(Selected Universities) May May-August Fewer courses Low opportunities

Popular intakes

American universities conduct three intakes in an academic year to allocate admissions to a massive number of students, unlike Indian universities, which offer a single intake in an academic year. The difference in the number of intakes between universities in different countries can be attributed to various factors. One of the primary reasons why universities in some countries offer multiple intakes is to accommodate the high demand for admissions. With a large number of students vying for limited seats, universities need to conduct multiple intakes to ensure that they can allocate admissions fairly. This also gives students who may have missed out on the first intake an opportunity to apply again.

Fall intake

The September or fall intake is the major intake in the academic year, and during this time, universities offer a wide variety of courses in different disciplines and specialisations. It’s the perfect time for students to explore. Since it’s the main intake of the year, the competition will be very high and the acceptance rate will be lower. Therefore, it's crucial for students to put in extra effort and stand out from the crowd by showcasing their skills and achievements in their SOP, personal statements, and essays.

Spring intake

The spring intake is a great opportunity for students who missed the fall deadline to start their academic journey. Although the number of courses offered during this period is less than the fall intake, it still provides a wide range of options for students to choose from. This intake is perfect for those who want to avoid the rush and competition that come with the fall intake. While scholarships may be limited during this period, it's still worth considering as there are still some available. Additionally, starting in January allows students to take advantage of summer internships and job opportunities that may not be available if they started in the fall.

Summer intake

Only a very few universities offer this intake, so the availability of courses is very limited. However, since there isn't any tough competition for admission, the chances of acceptance are relatively higher than for other intakes. Although the availability of courses for this intake is limited, it can actually be a blessing in disguise. With fewer students vying for admission, the chances of acceptance are relatively higher than for other intakes. This means that students who are interested in pursuing their education during this intake should take advantage of the opportunity. It may also mean that students have access to more personalised attention from professors and staff members due to smaller class sizes.

Types of US Student Visas

There are three types of Student Visas for you to enter and stay in the US. They are as follows :

F1 Visa

The F1 Visas are issued to students who are willing to pursue an academic program or study the English language at a recognized US college or university. All undergraduate and graduate programs come under the F1 Visa.

J1 Visa-

The J1 Visa is extended to people who are willing to receive practical training and study any vocational courses in the USA. These visas are also for visiting scholars and working professionals who are pursuing an exchange program.

M-1 Visa

The M1 Visas are issued to students who take up a vocational program or non-academic course in the US. Students under these visas are not allowed to work during the course of study.

The F1 and M1 visas are given out to students who intend to stay in the US for the entire term of their study programme, as opposed to exchange students and visitors who came to the country temporarily.

The F1 visa allows a foreign student to temporarily live in the United States while enrolled in an accredited study programme at an American educational institution. The institution must be authorised by the Department of Homeland Security (DHS) under the Student Exchange Visitor Programme (SEVP). It allows holders to enter the United States 30 days before the start date of their academic programme. The F1 visa also allows holders to bring dependents to the United States on a separate F2 visa. Spouses and unmarried minor children of F1 visa holders are considered dependents under US immigration laws.

The M1 visa is provided to overseas students who want to train or study in a vocational school or attend a study programme other than language courses in the United States.

Part time jobs in USA for international students

In order to be hired for off-campus jobs, international students must complete their first year of study. The newly arriving international students can only work part-time on their campus. During semesters, international students are only permitted to work 20 hours per week and 40 hours during semester breaks. This approach ensures that you will obey the laws and regulations while efficiently allocating your time between classes and work. Furthermore, this approach helps to avoid exploitation by firms who may try to exploit international students' need for labour.
