What is TOEFL?

The full form of TOEFL is the Test of English as a Foreign Language. It is an English language proficiency test that tests the ability of a student’s command over the English language. TOEFL is undertaken by candidates who want to study abroad in an English speaking country. This test is conducted by the ETS ( Educational Testing Services) and judges a candidate on all four academic English skills like listening, speaking , reading and writing.

The TOEFL exam is being conducted through the computer delivered method called the TOEFL iBT or TOEFL internet-based test.

Candidates can take the TOEFL exam on paper. Also ETS has launched TOEFL Home Edition for students to take the exam from the safety of their homes.The TOEFL iBT is widely accepted in the US and Canadian universities.

Students who want to study abroad can take the TOEFL as your English language proficiency test.If you are someone who has passed their 10+2 from a recognized board are eligible to take the TOEFL iBT. Apart from this there is no eligibility criteria set by the ETS for students who want to take the TOEFL.

What is TOEFL iBT?

TOEFL Internet-Based Test (TOEFL iBT) is the most convenient of all the 3 versions of TOEFL. It is the online version of the TOEFL test.

What is the TOEFL Test on Paper?

The TOEFL iBT Test on Paper version of the TOEFL is being conducted in selected countries including India. The exam is taken in 2 sessions and will be delivered on paper.

In the first session the TOEFL Reading, Listening, and Writing sections are taken on paper at a test centre. The TOEFL Speaking section is the second session and it is taken at home on the computer. It is supervised online by a human proctor.

What is the TOEFL Home Edition?

The TOEFL Home Edition was created during the pandemic to help students in taking the TOEFL exam. However, it has certain protocols required to follow by the aspirants.

Exam Syllabus

Reading Question types:

  • 3–4 passages, 10 questions each
  • Total no. of questions: About 30-40
  • Total time: 54-72 minutes

Scoring is done on the basis of the number of correct reading comprehension responses.

Listening Question types:

  • Listen to 3–4 lectures (3-5 minutes long, about 500-800 words), 6 questions each on them
  • 2–3 conversations (about 3 minutes long, about 12-25 exchanges), 5 questions each

TOEFL Registration

Students looking forward to taking the TOEFL exam have to register for TOEFL before the slot booking. TOEFL Registration can be done in 4 ways:

  • Online TOEFL Registration: Go to the TOEFL official website and create your profile by filling in your details. Make sure you put all the correct details.
  • TOEFL Registration by phone: Students can call for TOEFL slot booking at the Regional Registration Center. This registration closes seven days before the test date.
  • Email Registration: Students have to download the registration form from the official website of the ETS. After filling it correctly, send the form along with the payment to the address given on the form or send it to the Gurgaon centre address.
  • In-person Registration: The candidate needs to register in person at a master TOEFL Resource Center at the following address.
